This months wax melts are inspired by the Elements of nature.
The four elements of western culture are Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
Historically in culture, these four elements were believed to be essential to the force of life. These days our thoughts about elements may differ and vary. For example, perhaps these days we associate ‘air’ with the breeze on our face or ‘fire' as the warmth and comfort of our homes, but interest and intrigue in the elements are still very much with us in todays culture too.
So, for this months subscription box collection, I am focusing on two elements Air and Fire, (with Water and Earth to come later in the year).
Regular customers will know I make a variation on this theme for birth sign essential oil melts. The May subscription box has given me the opportunity to build upon existing blends and add new oils and botanicals that relate to the elemental themes.
So for this month, let me take you on an aromatic journey of Air and Fire.
The Greek philosopher Empedocles (5th century BC) divided the world into four elements associated with four divinities: earth, air, fire and water. Since then, cultures including ancient Chinese scriptures and Indian philosophers have referred to the elements in relation to nature and living creatures.
Folklore and fairy tales are sprinkled throughout with stories of how air and fire work to help our heroes to achieve great acts of courage and kindness. For example, think of the Phoenix rising from the flames or the Wind’s narrative in The Winds Tale, by Hans Christian Anderson
What do they symbolise:
Air
Air was seen as the element of the east, connected to the soul and the breath of life. Related to communication, wisdom, and the powers of the mind. Air was also the element for focus, thought, dreams and freedom. It was believed to carry away your troubles, blow away your strife, and carried positive thoughts to those who were far away. Air as an element is associated with the colours yellow and white.
Fire
Fire was said to be a purifying, masculine energy (found in all humans) associated with the south, and connected to strong will and energy. It related to emotions, in particular irresistibility, unpredictability and desire. Fire was also a symbol for the fertility of God and is associated with bringing about new life or destroying the old and worn. Colours often related to Fire are red and orange.
